When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days…Many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother.
As soon as Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him, but Mary remained seated in the house. Then Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother wouldn’t have died. Yet even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.
“Your brother will rise again,” Jesus told her.
Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me, even if he dies, will live. Everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
“Yes, Lord,” she told him, “I believe you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who comes into the world” (John 11:17-27).
Life After Death
Is there life after death?
This question’s been debated in every generation. For Christians, the answer is a resounding, “YES!” because we know that “if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, then he who raised Christ from the dead will also bring your mortal bodies to life through his Spirit who lives in you” (Romans 8:11).
But here’s my question as we prepare for Easter: Is there life before death? Can we actually live a different kind of life now, before we die? Or do we have to wait until Jesus returns on the last day to be transformed and made new?
Martha believed in the resurrection of the dead, but she thought it was going to happen sometime in the distant future. Jesus was about to show her that resurrection and new life weren’t so much events in the future but a person in the present: “I am the resurrection and the life.”
Jesus says, ‘Yes, Martha, there’s going to be a future resurrection…but I AM that resurrection, and I’m already here…now!’ Then, a few verses later, Jesus reveals His awesome power over death as He calls Lazarus out of the tomb and into new life…as if to say, ‘See? You don’t have to wait to experience my resurrection power. It’s right here in front of you.’
What Are We Waiting For?
Are we waiting for “the last day” to experience the resurrection power of Jesus, or do we realize that He’s here now, raising us to a new kind of life through His Spirit?
Are we living like the rest of the dead world—enslaved to temporary things that promise life but always disappoint? Or are we embracing a new kind of life that’s rooted in the eternal, life-giving presence and power of God?
Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection make it possible for us to be forgiven and reconciled to God—the Source of all life. Now we can truly live! Because Jesus was raised from the dead, we also can be raised to new life if we believe in hHim. And we can experience this new life today as Jesus’ Spirit empowers and guides us.
Jesus is the resurrection and the life, and He’s here – now. This means that we don’t have to wait until we’re dead to experience eternal life. Eternal life starts today!
