Making Sense of Sin and Its Effects

Last week, out of the blue, my son asked me two big questions that sent me scrambling: “Why did people fly planes full of people into buildings on September 11?” and “Is the hurricane Florence going to kill people this week?”

At least he gave me a day or two to recover between interrogations!

He is being exposed to—and attempting to cope with—information with which all of us are all too aware: we live in a world in which it’s difficult to make sense of sin and its effects. My job is to help him think about and respond to the effects of sin that he’s going to witness in a distinctly Christian way.

I really enjoy reading the news! It is not just part of my daily routine; I am constantly online reading articles and watching videos from many different sources to learn about what is happening. However, like most of us, I am often bothered by the news. I do not enjoy hearing stories about all of the bad things that are happening in our nation or around the world. Having said that, I am even more bothered by some of the stories that do not make news.

Living for Christ in a Violent Culture

On Wednesday, January 24, my wife and I sat down to have breakfast and to watch the news. During the commercials before the broadcast, an ad for a popular movie sequel came on the screen. Noting that it’s a movie we’ve never allowed our son to watch, Kelly asked me, “Do you think we shelter Owen too much?” I shook my head and said, “There is actually a lot of violence in those movies. We could explain to him that it’s not real. But, I’m not sure he’d understand.”
